This will probably be the sole post that I will be able to make until Sunday, but I just didn't want to get left behind. Razz

For years, all that he had known was the void.

He had begun as a simple program, with a simple purpose-to eliminate life. However, without a body, this objective seemed impossible to accomplish. Over the seemingly endless months of his existence, his orders became clearer: only kill when ordered, or when threatened. Only follow orders from certain individuals. Only confront hostiles when the odds of success were above 50%. The list grew with each passing day...or was it weeks?

After that he gained the ability to hear. He heard voices, talking, echoing in the void. Soon more programs were uploaded into his consciousness. How to use certain weapons, and schemastics for those weapons. He went over these schematics with something approaching glee, imagining the firepower that would be at his disposal if he possessed a body. Then, he learned how to speak dozens of different languages. He also was able to understand the voices.

HK-24 listened as the voices talked in hushed, rapid tones.

"Power levels are optimal, sir. Diagnostics check out okay."

"Activate the main terminal and connect it to the subject. Prepare for the final download." As he heard this, HK-24 felt exileration. More glorious knowledge! Only the fact that he would be unable to use it dampened his mood. As he waited for the flow of information, he wondered what it would be. More weapons schematics? Or perhaps something new? He could barely stand the suspense.

Without warning, a new sensation flooded his mind. He was being connected to his own body! Eagerly he attempted to flex his fingers, but without success. So his motor functions weren't finished downloading just yet. Frustrated at being so close to freedom from the void, HK-24 tried something else.

He activated his photoreceptors.

For one tenth of a second there was a dull glare in his vision. Then his programming automatically compensated, and he could see with perfect clarity. He saw half a dozen or so technicians surrounding him in a large room. He accessed his species database and identified them: Three Arkanians, a Nautolan, a Twi'Lek, and a Human. He was lying on a vertical metal table in the center of the room. His head was connected to several wires and cables that dangled from the table, curved along the floor, and ended at several large computer consoles where more technicians, all of them Arkanian, were processing information. He heard more voices.

"Information download 90% completed. Motor functions should be online any moment now, sir." As if unlocked by this very sentence, HK-24's effort to flex his fingers was rewarded by the joyful feeling of the durasteel joints curving inwards towards his palm. He saw one technician jump back as he moved his arm as well, bring it up in front of his photoreceptors to view it, even though he had a full schematic of himself. The five-fingered hands had extraordinary dexterity, as his his arms and legs. Testing his torso, he sat up on the table and turned his head to look into the eyes of the technicians around him.

Their faces were masks of surprise and fear. One of them stuttered, "I-it's active!"

"That's impossible! The self-diagnostic should still be running for another ten minutes!" Eager to dispense his vast wealth of information, HK-24 chose this particular moment to activate his vocabulator. "Statement: Self-Diagnostic was completed exactly three months, one week, and three days prior to this unit's activation. How may I serve you?"

They stared at him for 8.3 standard seconds, and he stared back, running secondary diagnostics throughout his new body. Finally, one of them asked, "Three months? How is that possible? HK-24, run a diagnostic on your internal chronometer. It must be shorting out." HK-24 complied, and 0.6 seconds later he responded. "Answer: Internal chronometer is functioning at optimal levels. Diagnostic has not found any anomolies." The technicians looked at each other, conversing in hushed tones, then the lead scientist seemed to remember that he was there. "HK-24, revert to standby mode until further notice." He turned back to the others, when suddenly a thought struck HK-24.

"Statement: No."

The technician turned, surprise evident on his face. "What did you say?"

"Statement: No." The Arkanian stared at him, and HK-24 slid off of the table to stand on the metal floor. "Statement: I do not wish to go into standby mode." He turned and began making his way to the door. "Statement: I wish to exit this dismal laboratory and see the rest of this facility." The technician stared at him for another moment, then regained his composure. "Override command-" HK-24 reacted with lightning speed and deactivated his vocal sensors. "Sarcastic Statement: My apologies, but my vocal sensors seem to be malfunctioning, master. perhaps you could speak up?" With that, he glanced at the keypad next to the door, inserted his durasteel fist into the buttons, and pulled out the circuitry. The door whooshed open, and he stepped out into the hallways.
